Economy
South Carolina has many tradable and valuable products including tobacco, rice, indigo, silver, china, silk fabrics, tools, skins, other foods, etc. South Carolina had many cash crops for example tobacco, rice, and indigo. We used these cash crops to sell and trade, which meant money. In fact, tobacco was a famous cash crop back then, but what they didn't know was that it would become very dangerous in the future. There are also many jobs such as fisherman, lumberman, shipbuilders, blacksmiths, farmers, tailors, hat makers, and printers. Remember in the introduction I mentioned slaves? Well in 1720 18,000 people lived in South Carolina, and 65% were African American slaves! Slaves did all the work, the English bossed the slaves around or just relaxed. There are also plantations were slaves work. Slaves were like butlers, but treated very badly. |
